The Hustlers used a persistent offense and strong blocking taking their first Texas Rollergirls victory of 2009 as they beat the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers 76-37 Sunday in Austin. In the second bout of the evening, the Hotrod Honeys started their championship defense defeating the Hell Marys 80-35.

Barbarella opened up the first jam with a lead jammer status, and a 4-0 jam as the Hustlers got off to an encouraging start. Mary Lou threaten countered back in the third jam with a 7-0 jam as the Heartbreakers gained a 11-8 lead. A three-point jam by the Hustlers Molotov M Pale, would narrow the Honky Tonks’ lead down to 13-12 in the seventh jam. This would set up one of the key jams of the bout.

Barbarella took the jammer line and broke out of pack first for the Hustlers without lead jammer status. The Heartbreaker jammer was waved off the track for a penalty, and the Hustlers had a major advantage. Barbarella worked her way through the pack for a tough pack pass for five points. She zoomed around the track again and with some hard work by her Hustlers’ blockers, make a second pass as the two minute jam expired. The team in purple took a 22-13 lead, which was followed up by a five-point jam by Acute Angel and the Hustlers lead at 27-13.

The Heartbreakers countered with a five-point jam in the 11th jam by Olivia Shootin’ John, with Molotov M Pale coming right back with a four-point jam in the 12th for the Hustlers. The Honky Tonk Heartbreakers scored the last point of the half, but the Hustlers would take a solid 31-19 lead at the half.

Barbarella came out and took a 4-0 advantage in the opening jam of the second half. Olivia Shootin’ John countered with a 4-1 score for the Heartbreakers in the third jam to narrow the lead back to 36-24. This set up a huge jam in the sixth jam of the second half. Babe Ruthless took the jammer cover for the Hustlers, and scored ten big points as the Honky Tonk jammer was sent to the penalty box. Curvette followed that jam up with another six points for the team in purple as they took a 54-25 lead.

Olivia Shootin’ John would counter with the biggest jam of the bout for the Heartbreakers. She took lead jammer status, while her teammates held the Hustlers jammer in the pack. OSJ finished off her first pack pass by spinning off a hip check from Bullet Tooth Tracy, and somehow landing in bounds on her skates, as she started to speed away towards her second pack approach to the cheers of the Playland crowd.

As the Honky Tonks kept the Hustler jammer in the pack, Olivia Shootin’ John caught back up to the pack, and completed another spinning, skate-tapping move for a second full pass of the pack. OSJ approached the pack one more time in this jam and she passed one more Hustler before Fearlys ended the run with a jammer takeout. Olivia Shootin’ John had scored 11 amazing points, and received a loud ovation from the crowd, having narrowed the lead to 59-37.

Das-It countered immediately for the Hustlers with a nine-point jam, which was followed by an eight-point jam by Molotov M Pale, giving the Hustlers their final winning margin of 76-37.

Flame & Rage got the Hell Marys on the board with five points in the ninth jam, but Vicious van GoGo also scored five points for the team in black and pink. Bloody Mary would score four points, The Angie Christ would score five points, and Lady X-treme would close out the first half with four points as the Hell Marys narrowed the Hotrod Honeys advantage to 27-18.

As the defending champions defended stoutly in the opening jams of the first half, the Honeys opened up the five jams of the second half shutting out the team in plaid. Unlike the first half, the champs exploded for 41 points in those five jams, highlighted by a 13-point jam by Lucille Brawl. Flame & Rage got the Hell Marys back on the board in the sixth jam with three points, but Lucille Brawl added four more Honeys’ points in the same jam.

The team in red plaid shut out the team in black for the next four jams as Bloody Mary put up five points, and Flame & Rage added three points. However the Hotrod Honeys ended the rally and scored enough points to move the final score out to an 80-35 win.
