Recap by Phil Arnold, Austin, Texas, Roller Derby Is Sport

The Hotrod Honeys held off a furious rally by the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers to win their Sunday night Texas Rollergirls’ league bout 52-45. In other Texas Rollergirls’ action, the Hustlers would take a lead in the last jam of the first half and keep control in the second half to beat the Hell Marys 69-50 in Austin.

The Honeys would open up their bout with a 4-0 jam by Cat Tastrophe that was
followed up by a 9-0 jam by Rice Rocket as the defending champions garnered a
13-0 lead after two jams. Olivia Shootin’ John scored a 1-0 jam for the
Heartbreakers in the third jam making the score13-1 in favor of the team in
black and pink. The Hotrod Honeys shut out the team in blue gingham for the
next four jams and the score was 21-1 after seven jams, with the Honeys looking
like they were going to run away with this bout.

But in the ninth jam, the Hotrod jammer would start the jam in the penalty box,
and Olivia Shootin’ John countered back with a 9-2 score narrowing the lead to
23-11. Desi Cration further narrowed the lead with a 2-0 advantage in the 11th
jam. However, the Hotrod Honeys would shut out the Heartbreakers in the last
three jams of the half, with Cat Tastrophe scoring six points and Rice Rocket
scoring three points. The defending champions went into halftime with a 36-17
lead.

The Honky Tonks opened up the half with Olivia Shootin’ John scoring a 2-0 jam,
and Yellow Die scoring a 1-0 jam to narrow the lead back to 36-20 after two
jams. But Vicious van GoGo countered with a 4-2 jam for the Honeys followed up
by a 4-0 jam by Cat Tastrophe and the defending champions would double the score
on the team in blue, 44-22 after four jams. The Heartbreakers’ Yellow Die
scored a 4-0 jam in the sixth jam, narrowing the lead to 45-28.

The defending champions started concentrating on defense and running out the
clock. Lucille Brawl and Vicious van GoGo each scored 1-0 jams after gaining
lead jammer status. But the Hotrod Honeys’ jammer got into penalty trouble, and
Yellow Die would pick up a 5-0 score in the next jam and narrow the score to
47-33. Rice Rocket picked up a 2-0 decision in the 11th jam; and for the next
two jams for the two teams would break even with a 3-3 scoring total.

The Hotrod Honeys would take a 16-point lead into the likely last jam of the
night and while the Heartbreakers’ blockers were holding the Honeys’ jammer in
the pack for the entire jam, Desi Cration broke through on two scoring passes,
getting nine big points for the Heartbreakers before taking an apparent high
block, and having to call the jam off seconds before the jam clock ran out of
time. The final score went up on the scoreboard as a 52-45 victory for the
Hotrod Honeys.

scored on consecutive 5-0 jams by Angie and Bloody Mary to take a
14-5 lead. A 4-1 jam by Bloody Mary in the eighth jam followed up by a 4-0 jam
by Angie would give the Hell Marys a 26-10 lead after nine jams in
the first half.

Acute Angel came up with a ten point jam for the Hustlers in the tenth jam to
narrow the lead 26-20. The Hell Marys held a five point lead going into the
final jam of the half. But the team in plaid would not get a jammer onto the
track when the jam began, apparently thinking there were a few seconds left
before the 13th jam of the half officially began. Acute Angel and the physical
Hustlers’ jammers took advantage of this situation scoring 14 points in the
final jam, gaining a 43-34 lead at the halftime break.

another 10 points scored in the ninth jam, and Molotov M Pale followed it up
with a 1-0 jam as the Hustlers shut out the Hell Marys for the last four jams of
