Hell Marys 43 vs Honky Tonk Heartbreakers 45

The Hotrod Honeys used a steady offense and a stingy defense to win their second
straight Texas Rollergirls championship in Austin as they defeated the Hustlers
88-24. In the consolation bout, the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers held off a furious
rally defeating the Hell Marys 45-43.

The Hotrod Honeys would start their bout strong with a 3-0 jam by Rice Rocket in
the first jam, followed by a 9-0 jam by Vicious van GoGo in the second jam. The
Hustlers countered with a 5-0 jam by Molotov M Pale that would narrow the lead
by the defending champions to 12-5 after the fourth jam.

The Honeys sent Shank out to the jammer line in the sixth jam of the first half,
and the all star blocker would score two grand slams, 10 points, and move the
lead out to a 25-7 advantage for the team in black and pink. Honey captain Cat
Tastrophe scored a 9-0 jam in the eighth jam, and Vicious van GoGo followed up
with a 5-0 jam in the ninth jam to give the Hotrod Honeys a 39-7 advantage.

The Hustlers would strike back with 5-1 jam by Molotov M Pale, and a 7-0 jam
scored by Acute Angel. The lead was narrowed to 40-19 in favor of the defending
champions, but Cat Tastrophe added a 4-0 final jam by the Hotrod Honeys to give
them a 44-19 lead at the halftime break.

While the first half was an extremely physical matchup between the all star
blockers on both squads, the Hotrod Honeys would cinch up the defense even more
in the second half as they held the Hustlers to only five points in the 20
minute half. Molotov M Pale would actually open the first jam of the half with
led jammer and would hit the pack to score three points for the Hustlers. But
Rice Rocket would also hit the pack for the Hotrod Honeys and pick up three
points. After that, the Hustlers would only score two points in the remaining
11 jams.

Rice Rocket of the defending champions would score the biggest jam of the night
with a 13-0 advantage in the seventh jam, and the Hustlers upset hopes were dim.
Cat Tastrophe, skating in her final league game for the Texas Rollergirls, would
end her league career on a high note picking up a 10-0 final jam and setting the
championship winning score at 88-24 on the Playland Skate Center scoreboard.

The top scorers for the Hotrod Honeys were Rice Rocket with 25 points, Cat
Tastrophe with 23 points, Vicious van GoGo with 17 points and Lucille Brawl with
13 points. The difference makers during the season and in the championship bout
were the Hotrod Honeys team blocking. Leading blockers for the two-time
champion Honeys were Voodoo Doll, Morphine, Shank, and Crackerjack.

Leading scorers for the Hustlers were Acute Angel with 10 points, Molotov M Pale
with eight points and Barbarella with six points. While the scoreboard showed
dominance by the Hotrod Honeys, the Hustlers physically stayed with the Honeys
in the blocking pack and never gave up. Top blockers for the Hustlers this bout
were Bullet Tooth Tracy, Curvette, Cheap Trixie, and Vanna White Trash.

The consolation bout between the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers and the Hell Marys was
really a tale of two halves. The Heartbreakers would open up the first half by
shutting out the Hell Marys for the first four jams. Yellow Die scored three
points in the second jam and Olivia Shootin’ John scored three more points in
the third jam as the team in gingham took a 6-0 lead early. A 3-1 jam by Yellow
Die and a big 9-0 jam by Olivia Shootin’ John would open up an 18-1 led after
the sixth jam.

The Hell Marys would apply some defense of their own and allow only one point
the next seven jams. Angie picked up five points jamming for the
Hell Marys and that was followed up by a 3-0 jam by Bloody Mary which narrowed
the Heartbreakers lead to 19-15 after the 13th jam. Olivia Shootin’ John
countered with an exciting 8-0 jam for the Honky Tonkers to close out the first
half and give the team in gingham a solid 27-15 lead.

Many fans might have thought this bout was over at the half. The Heartbreakers
had exploded for some big jams in the first half. But the Hell Marys struck
quickly for a 5-0 jam by Bloody Mary to narrow the lead to 27-20 after the first
jam of the final half. The Heartbreakers would use four and three point jams by
Olivia Shootin’ John to move the lead back out to 42-29 after nine jams.

However, the Hell Marys countered with a big 9-0 jam in the tenth jam and
suddenly the team in red plaid was within four points of Heartbreakers at 42-38.
Olivia Shootin John would get lead jammer and a 3-1 score in the tenth jam to
put the margin up to 45-39 for the team in gingham. Angie scored a
big 4-0 jam for the Hell Marys and with just seconds left on the clock, the
score had been narrowed to 45-43.

This would set up one last jam. All star jammer Olivia Shootin’ John would take
the jammer line for the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers, and all star jammer Bloody
Mary would take the line for the Hell Marys. The excitement with the fans was
palpable. Would the Hell Marys be able to finish this amazing come back and win
the bout?

Olivia Shootin’ John and Bloody Mary would make their initial passing run
through the pack, and as might be expected, the high scorer for the game would
emerge first out of the pack for the Heartbreakers with lead jammer status.
Olivia Shootin’ John called the jam off immediately with no time left on the
bout clock, and the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers emerged victorious with a 45-43
final score.

The leading scorer for the Heartbreakers was Olivia Shootin John with 33 points.
Yellow Die added 9 points, and Ruby Wring chipped in with 3 points for the
winning team. Top blockers for the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers were Desi Cration,
Rita Menweep, Belle Starr, and Sic Shooter.

The top scorers for the Hell Marys were Bloody Mary with 21 points, Angie with 16 points and Flame & Rage with 4 points. The leading blockers for
the Hell Marys were Kat A Killzem, Lady X-treme, Ryder Down, and Bea Attitude.

The next action for the Texas Rollergirls will be Sunday, September 6 with the
Texas Texecutioners hosting the Bay Area Derby Girls from San Francisco in a
WFTDA sanctioned bout at Playland Skate Center.
