Meet the Competition: North Central

The Naptown Rollergirls are hosting the WFTDA North Central Regional Playoffs, Monumental Mayhem, in Indianapolis, IN this weekend – and they have been busy, busy, busy whipping up some awesome preview videos for those of us who aren’t as familiar with our derby sisters to the north as we might be! You can head to their YouTube channel for the full list – new videos are still being uploaded in the leadup to the weekend – but here’s a couple to whet your appetite.

#4: Naptown Rollergirls, Indianapolis, IN
Tournament hosts Naptown seem to be a team on the rise – they entered the 2010 tournament as #9 in their region and now claim the number 4 spot. According to Derby News Network’s tournament preview, they boast a 10-2 win-loss record in 2011, including four wins over other Monumental Mayhem participants. They’ll face off against #5 seeded Cincinnati at 7.30pm Central on Friday.

#6: Mad Rollin’ Dolls, Madison, WI
Our very own Crackerjack started her derby career in Madison with the Dairyland Dolls and more recently, Texecutioner Vicious Van GoGo spent a year in Wisconsin as a star jammer for the Mad Rollin’ Dolls before transferring back to Texas Rollergirls. The women from Madison have represented the North Central at Championships every year since the region began (okay, so that was only in 2009 … they came out of the regional playoffs at #2 in 2009 and #3 last year), but have had a rough 2011 season to date. They’ll meet Minnesota Rollergirls on Friday at 1pm Central.

#2: Detroit Derby Girls, Detroit, MI
The Texecutioners met #2 seeded Detroit Derby Girls just a few weeks ago at the Golden Bowl tournament and escaped with just an 8 point win – it’s one of several narrow losses to top-tier teams Detroit has suffered this year. They’ve built a reputation for hard-hitting, physical, fast play and we are excited to see what they do in their first game of this tournament – it’s on Friday at 5.30pm Central.

As a reminder, Monumental Mayhem is the last of the four Regional Playoffs and the top three teams from the tournament will progress to the WFTDA Championships in Denver, CO this November, where they’ll face off against our Texecutioners and the top three teams from the other regions. You can follow all the action online at starting this Friday, October 7, at 9am, and keep an eye on Derby News Network for supplementary coverage and analysis.
