WFTDA 2011 Championship Tournament: Behind the scenes with Sic Shooter

From security check, to airport shuttle, to rental car, to hotel room, the first leg of the Texecutioners’ journey to the 2011 WFTDA Championships was filled with hope for what the next few days would hold.

The Texecutioners have been held to a rigorous training schedule including 6-8 hours of skating practice per week on top of three hours of land drills leading up to the 2011 WFTDA Championships held in Denver, CO this past weekend. In our spare time, we were encouraged to squeeze in additional workouts and training. As we flew home from Denver with our 3rd place bronze metals, instead of last year’s 11th place ranking, it made all the laps we ran in the Texas summer heat well worth it.

Saturday morning started as we met in the hotel lobby at 7:30 to travel over to the venue and warm up for the bout. Our first game was successful win: Texas – 141, Minnesota – 108. The only tragedy was Lucille Brawl earning two black eyes.

This win against Minnesota put us in an exciting and stressful situation. The winner of our next scheduled bout would earn a spot to compete for first place. Needless to say, all the Texies could feel the pressure in the locker room and then on the bench as we watched the chances of beating Gotham slip away with a final score of 113-195 in their favor.

Playing for third or fourth place didn’t seem to damper the spirits of the Texies too much. We hoped we would have a repeat of South Central Regionals, where we beat Kansas City for first in region. It wasn’t quite the same point spread, but our 136-112 win over Kansas City was enough to earn us bronze metals.

After the awards, the after party, the packing and traveling back to the airport, I heard buzz on the flight home of ways other teams had trained and adjusted their diets to reach their full athletic potential for this tournament and what we can do next year. Although the Hydra trophy didn’t fly home with Texas in 2011, we look forward to another season of training to earn another chance in 2012.
