TEXAS Takes 1st Place at WFTDA South Central Regionals!

TEXAS ROLLERGIRLS TAKE FIRST PLACE AT WFTDA PLAYOFFS; PROCEED TO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AS #1 REGIONAL SEED

The Texas Rollergirls’ All-Star Texecutioners took first place at this weekend’s WFTDA South Central Regional Playoff and advance to compete at the World Championship in Atlanta, November 2-4.

The Texecutioners entered the ‘Landlocked Lace-Up’, the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s South Central Regional Playoff, as the number 1 seed. They opened the tournament with a dominating win over 8th seed Omaha, picking up a 375-72 victory due to standout jamming from Sarah ‘Killbox’ Hipel and Vicious Van GoGo. In their next bout, on Saturday afternoon, they took on 4th seed Tampa Bay and again emerged with a margin of 249-98, guaranteeing Texas a slot in the tournament’s grand final.

In Sunday night’s final bout, the Texecutioners faced a surprisingly tough battle in 6th-seed Atlanta, who emerged over the weekend as a force to be reckoned with. The Atlanta team, who’ll host the November Championship, led the Texies through much of the first period but fell behind right before the halftime whistle. The Texies held the lead only briefly, trailing Atlanta through much of the second period before Smarty Pants and Vicious Van GoGo put up 32 unanswered points in the game’s closing minutes to secure the win for Texas.

The Texas Rollergirls, Atlanta Rollergirls and Kansas City Roller Warriors advance to represent the South Central region at Championships, which will be held in Atlanta, GA, on November 2-4. As the regional 1-seed, the Texecutioners have earnt a first-round bye; Atlanta and Kansas City will compete against 2- and 3-seeds from other regions to secure a second-round game.

The Texas Rollergirls are revered around the world as the godmothers of the modern flat track roller derby movement and offer a fantastic evening of family-friendly, but edgy, sports entertainment. Formed in 2003 as the only sports league of its kind, Texas Rollergirls started today’s flat track derby movement. There are now more than 600 Flat Track Derby leagues worldwide, with more forming every week. In its current incarnation, Roller Derby is an athletic competition complete with well-defined rules, divisions, tournaments, and a governing body: the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association is the international governing body for the sport of women’s flat track roller derby and a membership organization for leagues to collaborate and network. The WFTDA sets standards for rules, seasons, and safety, and determines guidelines for the international athletic competitions of member leagues. There are currently 156 WFTDA member leagues and 93 affiliated leagues in the WFTDA Apprentice program worldwide. The WFTDA is governed by a five-member, volunteer Board of Directors and managed by an Executive Director.
