Defending champions, the Hell Marys and the Hotrod Honeys kick off the Texas Rollergirls’ 10th-anniversary season in a rematch of last season’s championship bout. The 2012 champion Hell Marys, down their coaching staff and a few all-star players, will rally—no doubt spurred by their fan club’s raucous vuvuzelas and chants of “punch, punch, punch, arrow!”—against a formidable Hotrod Honeys team fueled by vengeance, plenty of racing adrenaline and the desire to go “faster, faster.”
The second bout in this season-opening double feature pits the something-to-prove Honky Tonk Heartbreakers—who eked out a third-place ranking last season—in what’s sure to be a knock-down, drag-out fight against the lightening-bolt-clad divas, the Hustlers, who failed to win a single home bout in 2012. Add to the roller drama a new rules set and the pressure to out-skate the competition for bragging rights during this monumental 10th-anniverary season, and you’ve got a recipe for hard-hitting, spectacular, show-stopping entertainment. Come one, come all!
About the Texas Rollergirls
The Texas Rollergirls are revered throughout the world as the godmothers of the modern flat track roller derby movement, and offer a fantastic evening of family-friendly but edgy sports entertainment. Formed in 2003 as the only sports league of its kind, the Texas Rollergirls started today’s flat track derby movement, and celebrate their 10th-anniversary season in 2013. There are now more than 1,400 flat track derby leagues worldwide, with more forming every week. In its current incarnation, roller derby is an athletic competition complete with well-defined rules, divisions, tournaments and a governing body: the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). And it all started in Austin, Texas. This is roller derby, and Texas is the reason.
