MAYOR LEFFINGWELL SALUTES ROLLERGIRLS
MOVING ON TO CHAMPIONSHIPS

AUSTIN – Mayor Lee Leffingwell will proclaim November 9th as “Texas Rollergirls Day” as the all-star Texecutioners move forward to the championships in Milwaukee.

“The Texas Rollergirls are at the top of their game,” said Mayor Lee Leffingwell. “The league re-started the roller derby phenomenon ten years ago, and our all-stars continue to prove we’re number one.”

Given the derby title, “Mayor Maynot”, Mayor Leffingwell has long been a supporter of the local league.

“As the Texas Rollergirls leave for Milwaukee this week, our strong support goes with them,” said Mayor Leffingwell. “The Texecutioners are number one in our hearts, and will prove number one on the track”.

The Texas Rollergirls All-Star team, the Texecutioners, took first place in playoffs in September and now head to the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) International Championships on Nov. 8–10 in Milwaukee.

The Texecutioners’ first game of the tournament will be against either London or Atlanta on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 10:00 a.m. CST.

Formed in 2003 as the only sports league of its kind, Texas Rollergirls started today’s Flat Track Derby movement. There are now more than 400 Flat Track Derby leagues worldwide, with more forming every week. In its current incarnation, Roller Derby is an athletic competition complete with well-defined rules, divisions, tournaments, and a governing body: the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).

The first-place trophy for the WFTDA Championships is named after an original Texas Rollergirl, Jennifer Wilson, aka “Hydra.” She skated for the Hotrod Honeys home team, and now skaters worldwide fight to have The Hydra trophy come home with them — but, the Texas Rollergirls are determined to bring it home to Austin!

Three members of The Texecutioners, Kimberly Harding (Polly Gone), Penelope Nederlander (Fifi Nomenon), and Nadia Kean (Smarty Pants) recently earned spots on Team USA, the top-ranked team in the sport; the Roller Derby World Cup will take place in Dallas, in 2014.

The entire tournament is available for pay-for-view live and in high-definition online at WFTDA.tv.

The Texas Rollergirls’ 2014 home season starts Feb. 22 at the Austin Convention Center. Be sure to make it out to see these world-class athletes in person. Full schedule available at: www.texasrollergirls.org.
