Special Announcement from the Texas Rollergirls!

29684_1433787117181_2930374_nThe 2015 Texas Rollergirls Advisory Board is thrilled to announce a new member of our Class Emeritus: Sic Shooter.

The Texas Rollergirls’ Class Emeritus is a special, reserved class that is meant to honor and recognize skaters who have gone above and beyond for our organization.

Sic Shooter has played an integral part of our organization since the roller derby revival in 2001. She skated with BGGW for a year and became an official Texas Rollergirl in 2004. She was drafted on to the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers and remained a loyal Heartbreaker, working as captain of that team in 2007 and 2012, until her retirement in 2014. This season, she is working as one of the coaches for the Heartbreakers. During her time as a Class S skater, she not only represented the Heartbreakers, she also skated for the Texecutioners and the Firing Squad.

Of course, her skating abilities are not the only things she has given to this league. Sic has worked in several vital positions in our league’s business, including serving as a Texas Rollergirls manager in 2006, part of the management team that created the Advisory Board and Chief Officer management set-up that we still use today.

She worked diligently as our league’s boot-camp coordinator for four years, followed by serving as an Advisory Board member during the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

Sic Shooter was a key player in successfully developing the Texas Rollergirls’ first-ever contract with the Austin Convention Center. She also worked closely with retired skater Cheap Trixie to sign the contract with the City of Austin that allowed us to paint our tracks and regularly practice at local Austin parks.
193694_1825177101686_7294821_oAfter serving on the Advisory Board, Sic worked in the marketing vertical, including after her retirement, as our ad-buying representative. She is still active in this role in our league’s business.

It is for all these reasons that the Advisory Board has gladly accepted her as a Class Emeritus member, and we have also decided to retire her number, 06, from the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers team. This number will be added to our retirement banners in the Blood Shed, hanging proudly among the numbers of other skaters who have given blood, sweat, tears and so much more to this league.

Sic, thank you for being such an outstanding skater, league worker and, most of all, friend.

May 16: Recap

TXRG 05.15: Hotrod Honeys vs HustlersHustlers vs Hotrods – 181-173

The Hustlers and the Hotrods met on the track this past Saturday for the first time since last season. Anticipation was high after the mid-season draft brought new players to both teams. New faces included the high-profile transfer of Jackie Daniels from Windy City to the Hotrods (and the Texecutioners, obvs!), and Spawna Chainsaw, graduating to the Hustlers from TXRG’s Juniors program. The Hustlers took an early lead, and held it until late in the second half, when we saw not one, but FOUR lead changes! Fielding a rotation of jammers featuring Jackie Daniels, newly-returned Hauss the Boss, Stone Her, Legal Knieval, and Kategory 5, the Hotrods threw everything they had at the walls set up by the Hustlers. Both teams brought incredible game play to the Convention Center, most notably the Hustler’s defensive line, easily the strongest it has been in years.Leaning heavily on jamming by Nicki Ticki Timebomb, Wild Carnage, Molotov M Pale, and jamming more frequently than we usually see her, Fifi Nomenon, the Hustlers put up offensive just as menacing as their defense. Commanding an at least twenty-point lead for the majority of the game, things got heated in the last few minutes. With time for just a few jams left, Fifi took the line against Stone Her. who went to the box on a forearm penalty. Fifi saw her chance and took it, picking up two grand slams. A wild track cut by Stone Her at the end of that jam left Nicki Ticki Timebomb jamming unopposed. With the game clock run out, Nicki Ticki Timebomb got lead and called the jam, at a final score of 181-173.

TXRG 05.15: Hell Marys vs Honky Tonk HeartbreakersHell Marys vs Honky Tonk Heartbreakers – 389 – 158

The Hell Marys and The Honky Tonk Heartbreakers met on the track again, with the Hells showing the same ruthless dedication they used to beat the then-undefeated Hotrod Honeys in last season’s final game. While they executed some excellent defense–Booty Queen, in particular, being the only blocker who successfully held back Freight Train–the Heartbreakers’ defense was not up to the Hells’ jammers.

Freight Train, Brown Buttah, Babyface Assassin, and Mini Massacre did the lion’s share of jamming for the Hells.  Thugs Bunny, Deep Dish Nitza, Big Nasty, and newcomer Scornbread took the star for the Heartbreakers.

Remaining mostly untouchable through the whole bout, Freight Train received notable resistance from both Booty Queen and Babe Ruthless, who executed an effective hit to the inside.
The Hells provided strong defense in addition to their strong offense. Of note were the efforts of PeaceWar and, returning from retirement, Sandy Ravage.

The Hell Marys took the lead early on, and never let it go. Despite strong, multi-point jams by Deep Dish Nitza and Thugs Bunny, the Heartbreakers were never able to catch up. The Hell Marys won, 389-158.

May 16: Pre-Game Run Down!

Are you ready to watch your favorite home teams battle it out? Saturday, May 16, we are back bigger and badder at the Austin Convention Center. We are taking an extended summer vacation this year, so make sure you see us now, or you’ll have to wait until our home team Champs in August.

hots v hustlersThe first bout of the evening will feature the undefeated Hotrod Honeys against the Hustlers. This one is guaranteed to be a nail-biter, so make sure you arrive on time. We had a mid-season draft that shook up all teams’ rosters a little, but none more than the Hotrods. The fast ladies in black have acquired roller derby’s sweetheart, Jackie Daniels, and Hauss the Boss left the Heartbreakers to return to the Hotrods. Look for both of them jamming on Saturday. Priss-n- Vinegar is the other draftee for the Hotrods. She is a triple threat, and could be utilized in any position on the track. The Hotrods are looking set to put up some big points in this game.

The Hustlers are a strongly defensive team, and will certainly give nothing to the Hotrods without a fight. They took on four new players from the mid-season draft. Impending Doom will be joining the Hustler walls, and giving the Hotrod jammers something to fight through. Recent junior roller derby graduate Spawna Chainsaw will be out there doing damage as well. The Hustlers also drafted former New Hampshire Roller Derby teammates Chicka Chicka Bam Bam and McKilla Queen. These ladies are already comfortable playing together, and will pick right back up where they left off up north. Any of these new teammates could take a turn with the jammer star along with Nicki Ticki Timebomb, who we have all learned means business on the track.

hearts v hellsThe second bout of the evening will feature the Hell Marys battling it out with the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers. The Hell Marys feature several Firing Squad skaters coming off of a hugely dominating weekend at The Big O Tournament. Adding to their defensive “Circle of Death” is Sandy Ravage and Rowdy Rothbomb. Yes, Sandy Ravage came out of retirement; sometimes you just miss derby too much! Rowdy Rothbomb was recently captain of the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls’ B-Team, and will be a strong link in the Hells’ wall. Watch for rookie Gravy, Baby! wearing the jammer star more in this game, along with Babyface Assassin, Mini Massacre, and Freight Train.

The Honky Tonk Heartbreakers are looking for their first win of the season, and will come out fighting on Saturday. After losing Hauss the Boss back to the Hotrods, the Heartbreaker jammer line has seen some shake ups. Rocking the star Saturday will be The Big 3 Under 5’3”: Thugs Bunny, Big Nasty, and Deep Dish Nitza. The Heartbreakers drafted three very tall, very talented skaters. Scornbread and Cold Case will be doing work in the pack, but don’t be surprised if you see either of them taking a turn jamming in this game. Just Carol is the other Heartbreaker mid-season draftee, although you will have to wait till August to see her skate. This team is in a must-win situation, and will certainly give it everything they’ve got. Make sure you stick around for the second bout!

Our 2015 season continues THIS Saturday, May 16 downtown at the Austin Convention Center. Doors open at 5pm, the first bout begins at 6, and the second at 7:30. In honor of Armed Forces Day, we are offering $10 tickets to all active and retired military personnel with ID. Get there early, stay late, and get loud for your favorite team! Faster, Break ‘em, Hustle, Hell Yea!

Love ya ‘till it hurts.

All Star Pre-Game Run Down

March’s home team double header featured two of the closest, most intense bouts in Texas Rollergirls history! To see what happens next for the Hell Marys, Hotrod Honeys, Honky Tonk Heartbreakers, and Hustlers, make sure you check out the next home team bout at the Austin Convention Center on May 16.

For the April bout, we are giving the home teams a break, and letting the All-Stars shine bright. This will be some of the highest level derby play you will see in Austin this year. If you want to witness hard-hitting blockers, quick-as-lightening jammers, and smart, calculated track play, this is the game for you.

hipelThe first bout of the evening will be the Texecutioners vs the Tampa Tantrums. Our All-Star team features some of your home team favorites, plus seven all-star only players that you haven’t seen yet this season. Everyone’s favorite jammer, and 2013 MVP of the WFTDA Champs, Bloody Mary, will be putting up points all night. Keep your eye on her if you can keep up. Smarty Pants is co-captaining the Texies this season, and is a triple-threat. She is known worldwide as an incredible derby coach, and keeps a balance of intensity and fun on the track for her team. Luce Bandit is the strong, silent type. She knows what the other team is going to do before they do, and will keep her team three steps ahead.

Barbara Ambush is a jammer spirit killer. She can stop on a dime to take the speed of the quickest jammer who will never juke around her. Sarah Hipel is another derby coach known the world over. She understands the rules better than most referees, and has the agility to jam or block. Watch for her jumping the apex forward as a jammer, or back as a blocker to smash an opponent. Keep a keen eye on Shortcut. She is the player who makes everything happen in the pack. She’s not always the one making the big hits, but she is setting them up. Polly Gone has the footwork and leverage to stay in front of any jammer, and if that jammer thinks she’s getting around, she will quickly find herself on the floor and out of bounds.

faceAfter the Texecutioners destroy the Tampa Tantrums, you may find yourself pumped up and wanting more. Lucky for you, the second bout of the night is the Texas Rollergirls’ Firing Squad vs the Tampa Bay Bruise Crew. After an undefeated 2014, our B-Team is back to continue their streak with a few new faces. Check out CC Boom putting the hurt on Tampa’s jammers. Her name is quite fitting, and they don’t call her “Boom” for nothing! Recent additions Mini Massacre and Nicki Ticki Timebomb will be doing work with the jammer star. Nicki with her strength to bust through any wall, and Mini with her fast feet and agility to fake out the smartest blockers.

Fan favorite BabyFace Assassin will be zipping around, jumping the apex, and scoring points before Tampa even knows what happened to them. Watch for Sideshow Ho, the triple-threat. One jam she will be laying devastating hits, and the very next she will take the star and rack up grand slams. Punkin’ Dominion will be in the pack smashing anyone who gets in her way along with Dolores Fuertes and MariEZ Livin’.

The Firing Squad may be TXRG’s B Team, but there is nothing B-Level about these women. This will be top level roller derby.

We welcome you back to our home, The Blood Shed (6110 Trade Center Drive) THIS Saturday, April 11. The doors open at 5pm, and the first whistle is at 6pm, but please get there early to tailgate with the Derby Brothers. This is guaranteed to be THE highest level derby play in Austin all year. Texas! Texas! Kill! Kill! Kill!

Love ya ‘til it hurts.

March 7: Game Recap

On Saturday, March 7th, the four teams of Texas Rollergirls returned to The Blood Shed for another evening of exciting roller derby. We knew it was going to be awesome, but we were not prepared for not one but TWO nail biters as both games included multiple lead changes and amazing plays. See below for scores and recaps!

Texas Rollergirls: Hell Marys vs HustlersHells vs Hustlers – 217-205, Final

One of the most exciting things about this game was the introduction of Freight Train to TXRG fans. Freight Train joined us recently from Houston, TX, where she skated for the Brawlers and the Houston All-Stars.

Many were excited to see what she would bring to the 2015 Hell Marys, still rebuilding after losing several skaters to retirement at the end of last season. Ladies and gentlemen, we were not disappointed.

Freight Train shared jamming duties with Peace War, Brown Buttah, and BabyFace Assassin, all of whom showed the Hustlers that they were not to be trifled with.

The Hustlers held a commanding lead until just about halftime, when Freight Train came and showed us why she’s Freight Train! (She brushed Me Shove You Long Time to the outside during one jam like it was nothing!)

After that point, it was a battle of the extremely tight defenses, both teams working beautifully.

Newcomers Nicki Ticki Timebomb and Wild Carnage jammed most frequently for the Hustlers, with veterans Molotov M. Pale and Fifi Nomenon coming in when the chips were down.

Despite a number of strong, high points jams for the Hustlers, the Hell Marys came out on top, with a very close final score of 217-205.

Texas Rollergirls: Hotrod Honeys vs Honky Tonk HeartbreakersHotrod Honeys vs Honky Tonk Heartbreakers, 197-193, Final

For our second heart stopping game, we saw the Hotrod Honeys go up against the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers.

In addition to this season’s newcomers, the exciting thing to watch in this game was former Hotrod, Hauss the Boss, going up against former Heartbreaker, DeBella DeBall.

After an early lead by the Heartbreakers, the Hotrods spent most of the game ahead of the Heartbreakers. However, by the end of the second half, the Heartbreakers were breathing down their necks!

Stone Her spent the majority of the game as lead jammer, but Hauss the Boss, Thugs Bunny, and Sideshow Ho frequently made high scoring jams.

For most of the second half, the Hotrods’ jammers racked up all the points, with the Heartbreakers having trouble against the Hotrods’ defense. In the last ten minutes of the game, however, the Heartbreakers’ jammers really did everything they could to close the gap.

In the second to last jam, Sideshow Ho brought the score to 197-193, making us all wonder if the Hotrods were in for quite the upset. It was not to be, however, when in the last jam, Stone Her got lead for the Hotrods, and because the game clock had already run down, called the jam with no more points scored for either team.

The final score stayed at 197-193, Hotrods.

TXRG megafan Phil Arnold posted this tweet, which BLEW OUR MINDS. Thanks for the history lesson, Phil!

Join us in April for an all-star double header you don’t want to miss! Our Texecutioners are taking on the all-stars from Tampa, Florida, in the first game of the night, and after that, our Firing Squad will face off against the b-team from Tampa! Come cheer on TEXAS! Get tickets now!
