|Each year, the Texas Rollergirls Junior League has a spring session (typically February through May) and a fall session (typically September through December). Special clinics are offered during the summer (typically June through August). Also, skaters are encouraged to attend the Texas Speed Club Friday speed skating classes to improve skating form, endurance, and speed.
The primary focus of the Texas Rollergirls Junior League program, formerly known as the Austin Derby Brats, is to develop athletic skills, character, confidence, leadership, and social interaction in girls through the sport of roller derby. We encourage any girl who already has basic skating skills to work with us and play with us. (We no longer accept beginner skaters.) Each participant is recognized as an individual and we actively seek to bring out the best in each one.
The junior skaters are trained by a team of qualified flat track roller derby skaters from the Texas Rollergirls home teams and the all-star Texecutioners. Roller Derby provides a unique sisterhood with participants coming from very diverse backgrounds. The Texas Rollergirls Junior League draws from this sisterhood to achieve its goals and prepare girls for adulthood. This junior program is designed to nurture and develop both skilled athletes and those who have not yet realized the champion inside of them. Participating athletes will gain the opportunity to develop leadership, sportsmanship, and teamwork skills, in addition to confidence, ability, and a sense of accomplishment that can carry over into other daily pursuits.
The Austin Derby Brats were the Austin Chronicle’s “Best of Austin” 2009 Critics Pick in the Kids category. (http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Awards/BestOfAustin/?
