Skater name: Slamdra Dee
Skater number: 59
Position: Blocker, Jammer
Year started playing with TXRG: 2013
Other league info: 2012 TXRG Rec League
Height: 5’4
Age: 33

What is your most impressive derby injury?
The loss of normal pants. Skater legs require spandex.

Cooking with my daughter. Throwing heavy things at the gym. Running, but never in a straight line.

Other sports you have played?
All of it: soccer, softball, volleyball, ultimate, pool. Does arm wrestling count?

What’s your most memorable derby moment?
When I took a spectacular fall on my crooked tailbone and actually popped it back into its correct place. It has never felt better.

How did you get into derby?
I went to my first bout, saw the Hotrod Honeys take the floor, and I said to my husband, “There. That. I want to do that.” Fast forward to the day I found out that Rec League would teach you to skate. I immediately ran out to buy skates and hit the Veloway that afternoon. I busted my tailbone within 5 minutes. Thankfully the amazing Kat A Killzem taught me how to stop and fall safely in Rec.

Favorite roller derby player?
It’s too hard to pick just one. I’m constantly impressed by the various styles and strengths of different skaters. Everyone has something to offer, at all levels.

Who inspires you?
My husband, who is the most driven person I’ve ever known, who never lets a fear of failure get in the way of pushing forward. He is my biggest cheerleader and always believes in me, but he also can see right through my BS when I make excuses. Also my daughter, who reminds me every day to live life with exuberance, curiosity, and joy.

What are you most thankful for in your life?
My family. I am impossibly lucky.

How/why did you pick your derby name?
“Look at me, I’m Slamdra Dee” — the shy suburban mom with no tattoos. A total square, really.

What’s the hardest part of being a rollergirl?
It takes hours and hours on skates to get better; it doesn’t happen overnight. You have to be confident about where your skills are now but also unsatisfied and striving to improve. That can be a hard balance to find.
