“I’m not out there sweating for three hours every day just to find out what it feels like to sweat.” — Michael Jordan #23
Skater name: RadioActive
Skater number: 91.7 fm
Position: Pivot, Blocker, (Jammer?)
Years played: 5
Birthday: 24 August
Occupation? Longhorn Wrangler at The University of Texas at Austin
Who is your favorite band/musician/group? The one I am currently listening to, but mostly their earlier stuff. I mean, I LOVE MUSIC, and there is just too much to choose from (rock, pop, reggae, ska, world, hip hop) to pick A favorite!
What is your most impressive derby injury? None as impressive as surviving through it all.
Drink of choice? Topo Chico
Hobbies? Music and Bikram Yoga (4 life).
Other sports you have played? Marching band and Dance Dance Revolution
What’s your most embarrassing derby moment? Janet Jacksonesque wardrobe malfunction (no explanation needed) – wear the correct bra folks, that’s all.
How did you get into derby? I discovered the Texas Rollergirls in 2006 through Rebellika and Melicious, who would come to my radio show for a monthly interview and ticket giveaways. They invited me to my first game and it was love at first sight (esp for the super hausome Hotrod Honeys), but I didn’t think I’d soon be a rollergirl. Rebellika bugged me relentlessly to get on some skates and try out. After some lengthy personal struggles I acquired a craigslisted pair of skates and the desire to try something new and daring; I just wanted to be a Texas Rollergirl and a Hotrod Honey.
Favorite food? Mmmmmm, ALL OF IT (except catfish ew), especially Thai, Vietnamese, Indian and pickle (sno-cones)
Favorite roller derby player? The Texas Rollergirls (My teammates, inspiration and godmothers)
Who inspires you? When I was a rookie we were told, “Pick someone you want to skate like and try to imitate them.” That person for me was always “Lucille Brawl”! Later I grew to not only appreciate Lucille’s amazing triple-threat skills, but her incredible business-savy contributions a well. Not only has she taught me how to be a better skater, but also how to be a better leader and business person. La La Love Lucille Brawl! <3
What are you most thankful for in your life? An amazing and supportive (and super creative) family, my sister helps me wih my uniform, listens to me moan about soreness and rave about wins and practice. I have awesome friends, and my music is always at 11.
How/why did you pick your derby name? I wanted to be “Killa Watt” (a reference to my radio roots) but it was taken. My friend from the radio station called one morning and said in the middle of the night my name came to him; RadioActive. Perfect. But people just call me “Radio” cause I’m always singing and I don’t set off Geiger meters.
How has roller derby impacted your life? What life? Derby is my life. I’ve modified work, entertainment, family and other friends schedules to fit in derby practice and games. I’ve also traveled the world, met hundreds of incredible women (a few good men), and have some of the best friends I could ever imagined in my teammates (por vida)!
What’s the hardest part of being a rollergirl? The line of men waiting for my autograph. ;p
First thing you do after a derby bout: Take off my stinky pads.
Would you like to brag about your skates? My skates are my twitter icon (#followme @Radioactive917)
You play several positions, which one is your favorite & why? I love killing jammers; set & spike, JTO, recycling, waterfall, four on the floor, all of that. I also love wearing the pivot strip, and, well, “all the glammer to be the jammer” (I did have a triple grand slam in Baltimore…good offense hehe).
Which one of your tattoos is your most meaningful – what is it and why? My first tattoo was the classic “MOM” on a banner around a heart. I figured, it was the only way she was going to approve, AND I do love my mom (like, a lot … enough to get a tattoo).
Most memorable experience you’ve had with a fan: Any time a little (or older) girl says “I want to grow up and be a roller derby girl”. I love our derby brats and rec league.
