What do you do when you’re not kicking ass playing roller derby?
I am a Supervisor with Xerox at the State of Texas Data Center. My team is responsible for refreshing and rotating media containing backups of the data stored on the servers within the Data Center for disaster recovery purposes.
What is your most impressive derby injury?
I don’t feel that being injured is at all impressive. Bitter, party of 1! I am currently off-skates due to a grade 3 MCL tear in my right knee.
I like fixing things or breaking them completely… whichever comes first.
Other sports you have played?
The last sports I played before derby was Little League baseball when I was 10. I played 3rd base. My dad still has a newspaper article which shows me with my tongue hanging out, catching a fly ball during tryouts. I think he’s almost as happy as I am that I made Texas Rollergirls.
What’s your most embarrassing derby moment?
I have a less-than-graceful false start during a Rec scrimmage immortalized in video format somewhere on Facebook that involves my feet coming out from under me completely and ends with me falling flat on my butt. Needless to say, thank you WFTDA for the new single-whistle starts!!!
How did you get into derby?
My friend and TXRD skater, Alley Bamazon, taught me how to skate at the local rinks and at the Veloway in the summer of 2010. I started going to speed skate class in the winter of 2010. Then, I learned about Smarty Pants offering coaching and began taking regular lessons from her in January 2011.
MMMmmmm food. I am a fan of Tex-Mex. A few of my favorites are the al pastor tacos on corn tortillas at Polvos, the Texas Star chicken fajita nachos with burnt onions and extra pickled jalepenos from Trudy’s, and the Plato Del Mar from Pappasitos.
Favorite roller derby player?
I have so many derby players that I love to watch!!! Smarty Pants, Polly Gone, Cheapskate, Beyonslay, Bork Bork Bork, Oivia Shootin’ John, Psycho Babble, Desi Cration, Hauss the Boss… so many more!!!
Who inspires you?
Anyone who works hard to get where they want to be and does so with dignity and dedication.
What are you most thankful for in your life?
Quitting smoking. Best decision I have ever made.
How/why did you pick your derby name?
It was given to me by my friend, who went through a bevvy of interesting monikers when putting me down as her +1 for entry into derby bouts. XXXTINA stuck.
How has roller derby impacted your life?
I schedule my life according to derby games/scrimmages, derby fundraisers, derby events, derby training camps, team practice, league practice, and off-skates workouts.
What’s the hardest part of being a rollergirl?
Being involved in any sport requires a large amount of dedication and personal sacrifice. When you consider that the business aspect of the sport of roller derby is run by the athletes, it is pretty amazing to think that each member of every league out there is volunteering her time, money, and resources to participate or contribute to her sport on a regular basis. This often means sacrificing family time, sleep time, vacation time, and any other free time you might have. Thankfully, this sport is so gosh darned loveable!
First thing you do after a derby bout:
Would you like to brag about your skates?
I skate in a Riedell 595’s, RollLine Driver plates with red anodized aluminum trucks, and a variety of wheels based on the surface I am skating on.
