How did you get into derby?
I personally can’t give myself credit to finding roller derby. Roller Derby found me. Long story short, my dad was getting his skates fixed at Montrose Skate Shop and the shop owner, John Mckay; told my dad all about it. Mr. John was super into roller derby and thought I might be interested. Eventually my dad mentioned it to me and handed me a flyer.
Frosted Mini Wheats, Catfish, Dominos Pizza
How/why did you pick your derby name?
Initially, I had a hard time choosing one because I just got used to people calling me “Tinisha” (my real name) in rec league. It wasn’t until the first time I scrimmaged with HRD I was given the name “Freight Train.” I was given this name by a skater (Becky Booty) I accidentally back blocked while I was jamming. The amount of force behind the hit knocked her down hard. I didn’t really have a skater name then and I had overheard “If she doesn’t have a name yet, I am just going to call her Freight Train!” I thought it was great so I kept it.
What’s the hardest part of being a rollergirl?
Attempting to stay in shape during the off season. Derby isn’t like basketball where you can play in a pick up game almost anywhere at anytime of the day. The only thing you are able to survive on during what I call “the fat months” (October, November, December) is mix up scrimmages at other leagues and your own individual efforts to work out.
Would you like to brag about your skates?
Sure, Atom Wheels and Atom products are awesome. Currently I wear Vertigo Q6 boots, Pilot plates, Bionic short stem toe stops, and DNA Atom Wheels. I think they might be releasing color boots soon, so I am looking forward to that. Hopeful color combo…Red, Black, and White.
Which one of your tattoos is your favorite?
I don’t have any tattoos
Most memorable experience you’ve had with a fan:
This one time I got to sign a hairy chest. It was cool.
